The Significance of Internet Exchange Points

Internet is a worldwide network connecting millions of computers and over 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. With this, local Internet traffic passes through different international channels before it goes back to its country of origin. Hence, Internet Exchange Points (IXs) are formed.

An IX is a physical infrastructure through which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) exchange Internet traffic among their networks. The main purpose of an IX is to provide direct connectivity to all networks, via the exchange, instead of through one or more third-party networks. There are many advantages of direct connection but the most important of which are faster access to local destinations and reduction of international costs leading to a common good.

The PREGINET endeavors for IPv6

The Internet Protocol (IP), is one of the pillars of the Internet. It is the one responsible for addressing hosts and routing datagrams from a source to a destination host across one or more IP networks. Thus, IP sets an addressing system which has two (2) functions: a) identifying hosts; and b) providing logical location service. Said functions are accomplished by defining standard datagrams and addressing system. The IP version 4 (IPv4), which is the first major version of IP, is the dominant IP. However, according to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), IPv4 officially depleted on 03 February 2011.

Due to several benefits that can be gained by employing a video streaming technology, the Department of Science and Technology – Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) tapped the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) to provide technical assistance in a video streaming solution for the “ASEAN ICT Masterplan (AIM) 2015 Forum” last 15 February 2012 at the DOST-ICTO, C.P. Garcia Ave., U.P. Campus, Diliman, Quezon City.

The Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) and the Embedded Systems Group (ESG) of the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) took part in the Asia Pacific Advanced Network 33rd Conference on 13-17 February 2012 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Said five (5)-day event highlighted tutorials, workshops and demonstrations covering advanced network technologies and applications.

CBSUA joins CONNECT’s Sustainability Science Online Lecture

Last 18 January 2012, the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) expressed its interest in joining the COllaboration for Network-eNabled Education, Culture, Technology and science’s (CONNECT) Sustainability Science Course, realizing the importance of participating in online international lectures. The Sustainability Science Course, which is delivered by the Hokkaido University in Japan, is part of UNESCO Jakarta’s Comprehensive Programme to Enhance Technology, Engineering and Science Education in Asia (COMPETENCE) Project, which aims to provide a sustainability education model among higher educational and governmental institutions.


PREGINET assists release of UPCAT results

The Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) provided a mirror website for the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) results for incoming freshmen of Academic Year (AY) 2012-2013 released on 18 January 2011.

“PREGINET lent a vacant server to the University of the Philippines (UP) to publish a copy of the UPCAT results. The server was very useful in deloading UP machines due to a number of UPCAT result viewers. The mirror site also served as a backup copy in case UP’s main site would be down,” said PREGINET Network Engineer Rod James U. Bio.


Upper house taps PREGINET once again

The Senate of the Philippines, once again, tapped the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) to provide technical assistance for the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato C. Corona starting 16 January 2012. Said impeachment trial would be video-streamed live, by the Senate, using PREGINET. “The Senate’s Electronic Data Processing and Management Information System Bureau (EDP-MIS) and Public Relations and Information Bureau (PRIB) would be encoding the stream of the hearings. Accordingly, the encoded stream would be sent to PREGINET, which would be distributed to the Internet,” said PREGINET Technical Head Bayani Benjamin R. Lara.


Bangladesh connects to TEIN3

On December 29, 2011, Bangladesh connected to the Trans-Eurasia Information Network 3 (TEIN3). The Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) now has 45Mbps connectivity to the TEIN3 Mumbai PoP. Through said connectivity, 100,000 Bangladeshi researchers in 100 academic and research institutions in Bangladesh can collaborate with other researchers worldwide, on research programs, which can improve the potentials of the country.
