UP PGH joins the 29th APAN Medical Working Group SessionThe University of the Philippines Manila Campus participated the Medical Working Group Session of the 29th Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) Meeting last February 11, 2010.

The event highlighted discussions and oral demonstrations on Thoracoscopic Surgery. Dr. Chang-Hyun Kang of Bundang Hospital in Seoul, Korea discussed the Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) segmentectomy. Also during the event, Dr. Takeshi Shiraishi of Fukuoka University Hospital in Japan presented the surgical procedures on the non-small cell Lung Cancer’s stage.

UP Manila was able to join the high-bandwidth actual demonstration on surgical practices through their 45 Mbps link to the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET).

UP Manila’s delegation was led by Department of Surgery Chair Dr. Serafin Hilvano. The network set up was assisted by the Information Management Services headed by Professor Roli Talampas while the audio and video set up was assisted by the National Telehealth Center headed by Dr. Alvin Marcelo.

The Medical Working Group Session was chaired by Dr. Shuji Shimizu and Dr. Hiromi Iwasaki of Kyushu University Hospital in Japan.

The telemedicine session initiatives bring the medical experts from different top hospitals all over the world together to share their experience and knowledge on medical procedures.
