UPLB Logo Every year, thousands of students graduate from different colleges and universities across the country. Most of the time, however, limited numbers of guests get accommodated to actual graduation ceremonies due to constraints on the available venue, management and organization of the event itself, budget and the likes.

On its 39th Commencement Exercises held on 26 April 2011 at the DL Umali Freedom Park, the University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) was given the opportunity, through the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET), to bring the graduation ceremony closer to families and friends of graduating students, as well as university alumni, who could not make it to the event.

The PREGINET provided technical assistance and bandwidth allocation for a live video streaming, which enabled people concerned to watch said ceremony via UPLB’s website. A snippet of said video showed former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide, Jr. delivering his speech addressed to more than 1,700 graduates, during the commencement exercises.

The maximum simultaneous viewers of the video streaming is almost 600 using at least 65Mbps bandwidth from the start of the program,” DOST-ASTI Science Research Specialist II Rod James U. Bio explained.

Testimonial and recognition rites were likewise facilitated by each college as part of UPLB’s commencement exercises.
