A live surgical demonstration that focused on the The Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) provided technical support to the first telemedicine activity of the Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) – Department of Otorhinolaryngology last 10 August 2011.

Said activity, which particularly focused on the First Combined Vibrant Soundbridge Hearing and Pinnal Reconstruction for Congenital Aural Atresia, aired a live surgical demonstration and lecture. “The surgery was actually conducted at the ORC by the guest surgeons from Germany headed by Dr. Joachim Muller, as well as Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong and Dr. Cesar V. Villafuerte Jr., and was broadcasted live at the Nursing Service Training Room attended by other MDH resident doctors,” said PREGINET Technical Head Bayani Benjamin R. Lara. According to Dr. Rosebe M. Nacion, MDH Resident Coordinator, the activity was conducted for the benefit of the other consultants and for the learning of other residents.

As the first vibroplasty procedure done in the Philippines, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology resident doctors appreciated the help of PREGINET in providing equipment and expertise for their premier telemedicine. “The service was apparently fine. PREGINET delivered the service that we were expecting,” said Nacion. She also mentioned that the MDH did not encounter any problem during the PREGINET Team’s conducted testings, as well as equipment setup prior to the event.

Medical conferencing, popularly known as telemedicine, has a vital role in medical education and delivery of real-time medicine. It is one of the activities assisted by PREGINET.
