Envisioning a nationwide conference through telemedicine, the Veterans Memoreial Medical Center (VMMC) and the Cebu Velez General Hospital (CVGH) had a productiv test broadcast last 19 September 2013 with the assistance of the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET).
Dr. June T. Mendiola, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology of VMMC, started off with an opening remarks, stating the objective to facilitate the event from a distance, through the telemedicine. He emphasized that telemedicine, with the use of high speed Internet connection, could foster distance learning, teaching and even healing among hospitals. Dr. Mendiola added, “[t]his endeavor today, will somehow show some promises for a two-way surgical conference in the future.”
Meanwhile, the VMMC, together with the CVGH, conducted a trial of the lecture conference to comment on the quality of audio-visual transport between the two (2) distant parties, in preparation for their dream surgical conference. Dr. Vicente Victor D. Ocampo, Uveitis Specialist and Training Officer of the VMMC, gave a lecture on “TB Uveitis,” while Dr. Lyll Karen Bigornia-Arriola, Retina Specialist of the CVGH, discussed the “Periocular Steroid Injections for Intraocular Inflammation and Uveitis.” The VMMC also showed a recorded surgical video over the Internet, to test its reception quality.
Although residents of both hospitals observed some flaws during the lecture conference, the audio was clearly audible and the reception was deemed good.
In general, the test broadcast happened to be a fruitful interaction between the two (2) hospitals. The CVGH congratulated the VMMC and the PREGINET for the passion of continuing this learning experience — telemedicine. They also acknowledged PREGINET’s continued assistance to the VMMC.
Said trial of lecture conference is VMMC’s 6th teleconference assisted by the PREGINET.
