UN ECOSOC, DOST joint bureau meetingThe Department of Science and Technology (DOST), represented by Undersecretary Fortunato T. de la Peña, Chair of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development, participated in a joint bureau meeting between the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) Bureau and Chairs of the functional commissions, via PREGINET’s video conferencing facilities, held at the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute last 02 May 2012.

Said event aimed at soliciting views from the members, particularly, on the key issues that should find their place in ECOSOC’s development agenda beyond 2015. It sought for concerns on “Beyond the MDGs: Harnessing Science and Technology to Address Development Challenges.” The joint bureau meeting was designed to be a brainstorming session and an exploratory means to attain closer collaborations between and among various functional commissions under the ECOSOC. Contributions of the Council’s subsidiary bodies and functional commissions would be discussed in ECOSOC’s 2013 meeting.

The ECOSOC was established under the UN Charter as the principal organ responsible for: a) promoting higher standards of living, full employment and economic and social progress; b) identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; c) facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and d) encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
