ASTI supports UNTL’s collaboration with SOI Asia

SOI Asia ProjectThe Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) – Philippine Research Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) participated in the “School on Internet Asia (SOI Asia) Site Inauguration” on 09 December 2010 at the Faculty of Engineering, National University of Timor Leste (UNTL).

The SOI Site Installation Project at the UNTL aims to broaden and enhance the access of the UNTL to educational materials and improve information/knowledge flow between the Timor Leste and other Asian countries.

Other SOI member-countries, as well as the COllaboration for Network-eNabled Education, Culture, Technology and sciences (CONNECT-Asia) partners such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Timor Leste joined in subject event through the connection provided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization connection.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Thomas Xavier of the UNTL, emphasized the importance of UNTL’s connection to national research and education networks. As Professor Achmad Husni Thamrin of the SOI Asia moderated the presentation and discussion, representatives from the ASTI (Philippines), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Bangladesh), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (Indonesia), Keio University (Japan), Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia) and UNTL gave their insights on the contribution of Science towards national development, including its challenges.

As mentioned by Ms. Jelina Tanya Tetangco, Sr. Science Specialist of ASTI, “the disparity in information and communications technology and Science and Technology policy among regional countries was the main challenge for mobilization of Science and knowledge in Asia.”

The event ended with a closing remarks by Dr. Keiko Okawa of the Keio University who reiterated the importance of collaboration among SOI Asia member-countries.
